A homeless man is to be honoured today for rescuing his pet rabbit from the River Liffey in Dublin.

John Patrick Byrne saved Barney after the animal was thrown over O'Connell Bridge last week.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with a public order offence, as well as animal cruelty, in relation to the incident.

Mr Byrne will be given an award for his actions by the Animal Rights Action Network this afternoon.
