Gardaí have launched an investigation into suspected fraud at a post office in Gorey, Co Wexford.
It is understood that around €1.5m worth of financial irregularities were discovered during an internal audit.
An Post alerted gardaí in Wexford after the discrepancy was found on Wednesday.
Gardaí are now investigating what they say is an allegation of misappropriation of funds.
It is understood that officers from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation will be involved in the case.
Staff at the post office are also expected to be interviewed as part of the inquiry.
In a statement, An Post said Gorey Post Office remains open for business as normal and that the investigation will not impact in any way on customers, retail or mail service.
