1989 - Two RUC officers were murdered

A statement given by a civilian working in Dundalk Garda Station was partially written by someone else, according to evidence given at the Smithwick Tribunal today.

Nora Burns was working in the sergeant's office on the day two RUC officers were killed, 13 minutes after leaving the station.

She made a statement to then Inspector Kevin Carty in the days after the murders.

In that she recalled she was not aware of the RUC men's visit nor did she know them.

However, she said the start of the statement was not written by her nor were the last two sentences.

They read 'I did not see any member enter or leave Dundalk Station on that day. This statement is correct.'

Ms Burns said it was her signature at the bottom of the statement.

In response to a question from tribunal counsel, Fintan Valentine, the witness said she presumed Insp Carthy added in these sentences.

An earlier witness, retired garda Ann McMorrow, said she could not recall making a statement to Supt Pat Tierney in Dundalk in the days after the murders, but she could remember making one to Assistant Commissioner Ned O'Dea.

Ms McMorrow also said she was not aware of rumours of a possible IRA mole operating within the station.

RUC officers Supt Bob Buchanan and Chief Supt Harry Breen were killed when they were ambushed by the IRA after they left a meeting in Dundalk Garda Station in March 1989.

The tribunal is examining whether a garda mole passed information to the IRA, assisting them in setting up the ambush.
