The car scrappage scheme, which was announced in the December 2009, comes to an end tomorrow.

The scheme offered motorists €1,500 off new low emissions cars if they scrapped their own cars that were aged ten years or older.

The scheme was initially meant to expire in December last year, but it was extended in a modified form until this month.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Alan Nolan, Director General of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, said the scheme had been very successful.

More than 12,000 cars have been sold as part of the scheme this year, with over 29,000 sold during the whole initiative.
