Gardaí in Cork investigating the robbery of the pensioner in the city on Sunday have arrested two men and recovered a substantial amount of money.

The 70-year-old man was conned out of his life savings by a man pretending to be a garda who approached him outside his home in Fairhill as he was about to head to Medjugorje on a pilgrimage.

One man, in his late 20s, was arrested in the Tower area of Blarney and a substantial amount of money recovered after gardaí carried out a search of a house there shortly after 3.30pm.

A second man, also in his late 20s, was arrested in the Fairhill area during a follow up operation by members of the detective branch at Gurranabraher, supported by members of the Armed Response Unit.

Both are being held at Gurranabraher Garda Station and are being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A woman in her mid 20s is helping gardaí with their enquiries.

The victim was uninjured during the incident but is said to be in a state of shock.

Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is heading up the investigation, said that there was a tremendous response from the public in the area, including offers of financial help for the man.
