The Department of Social Protection is getting 1,000 tip-offs every month about fraudulent welfare claims, Fine Gael's Jerry Buttimer has told the Dail.
He said that those who needed help had to get it but there was also a need to tackle welfare fraud.
He welcomed the tip-offs, saying the public was beginning to police the system.
He was speaking on the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill.
