A small explosion has damaged houses in the Brandywell area of Derry in Northern Ireland.

The blast happened at around 11pm last night on the Lecky Road in Derry.

The PSNI said no injuries were reported.

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson said she was amazed nobody was hurt in the attack and added it was unclear who or what the target was.

In one of the houses affected shrapnel went through the window of a bedroom.

Ms Anderson said: ‘In that bedroom, thankfully, there was no one asleep at the time.’

She said in the next room there was a two-year-old baby in a cot and the family was devastated thinking about what could have happened if the shrapnel had gone through that window.
