The General Manager of Intel Ireland has described as 'revolutionary' the new 3D chip developed by engineers at the company.

Eamonn Sinnott says it will allow Intel to continue to double the performance of its chips every two years.

He said the company hopes to introduce the new chips at the end of this year for use in laptops, PCs and eventually mobile phones too.

Mr Sinnott, who is also Vice-President of Intel's Technology Manufacturing Group, said it was the company's ambition to introduce the chip in all its products.

Asked whether the development might lead to more Intel jobs in Ireland, Mr Sinnott said it was more about reinventing the fundamental building blocks of what Intel does.
