Two men are still being questioned following an assault on a man in Dublin in which his arm was partially severed.

The victim, a Romanian man, was attacked with a machete or meat cleaver and is critically ill in hospital.

The victim was outside a Spar shop on the North Circular Road at around 1.20am this morning when a row broke out. He was attacked and his arm was almost severed from his shoulder.

He tried to walk to the nearby Mater Hospital but two gardaí saw him and came to his assistance.

A spokesperson for the hospital has said he remains in surgery and his condition at this stage is unknown.

The two detained men, who are from the Coolock area, are being questioned at Store Street Garda Station where they can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
