The funeral has taken place of 43-year-old Deirdre McCarthy in Co Clare.

Her body was discovered on Fanore Beach last Thursday. A post mortem revealed that she had died violently.

Hundreds of mourners attended Ms McCarthy's funeral in her home town of Ballyvaughan in north Clare today.

The community has been shocked by events since Deirdre was reported missing last Monday morning.

Her family thanked everyone that was involved in the search for Deirdre and in their support since the discovery of her body.

Deirdre's coffin was followed by her mother Helen, four sisters and her brother as they made their way to the local cemetery where she was laid to rest.

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder.

The man, who is in his 30s, is being held at Ennis Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or movements on the roads in and out of Ballyvaughan, Lisdoonvarna or Kilfenora between 11.30pm on Sunday 27 March and 7am on Monday 28 March to contact them.
