The Defence Forces has confirmed that one of the runways at Baldonnel Airport has been vandalised.
Following an engineering assessment of runway 2911 this evening, the damage has been classified as superficial.
A number of pock marks were discovered on the runway during a routine inspection this morning.
The runway will undergo a thorough sweep to remove any debris, and is expected to be fully operational by tomorrow morning.
The runway was damaged overnight and is closed pending an investigation.
Minor repair works will be carried out in due course.
Baldonnel Aerodrome remains fully operational and no flights were affected by the incident.
The military police and Gardaí are continuing to investigate the cause of the damage.
