Detectives investigating the murder of a German teenager in Co Antrim 23 years ago have said they believe they are very close to making a significant breakthrough in the case.

Inga Maria Hauser was found dead in a forest near Ballycastle in 1988, two weeks after she had arrived in Northern Ireland on a ferry from Scotland.

Police are to carry out house-to-house inquiries in north Antrim in the coming weeks.

Ms Hauser, an 18-year-old student, was last seen on board a ferry from Scotland to Larne on the 6 April 1988.

Two weeks later, her body was discovered in a remote part of Ballypatrick Forest.

Detectives believe she was subjected to what they describe as ‘a vicious and ruthless assault’, and died shortly after arriving in Northern Ireland.

They say more than one person may have been involved in the killing.

A DNA profile was obtained from the scene of the crime. 2,000 DNA samples have been analysed to date, but a definitive match has yet to be found.
