A teenager has been convicted at the Central Criminal Court of the manslaughter of his 50-year-old neighbour in Dublin just over two years ago.

Conor Duffy, of St Mary's Road in East Wall, had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Aidan O'Kane on 7 December 2008.

Mr O’Kane was shot and killed following a confrontation with a group of teenagers who had thrown eggs at his home.

Duffy was also convicted by a majority verdict on three charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition

He will be sentenced next month. Duffy was granted bail before sentencing after the judge heard he has a hospital appointment tomorrow for his injured leg.

He was 16 when he shot dead his neighbour in a lane near Mr O’Kane’s home on Shelmalier Road.

The victim's son who, was there at the time, told the trial his father suffered months of torment from local youths, including Conor Duffy, and decided on the night he was killed to get one of them.

The court heard today that after Mr O’Kane left his home, Duffy went off to get the gun, cycled back with it, dropped his bike, walked into a lane, faced Aidan O'Kane as he came in, pointed a .357 black Magnum revolver at him and held it for five seconds before shooting him.

Defence Counsel Sean Gillane said Duffy was a child in law and while he accepted he killed Mr O' Kane, he did not accept he murdered him.

The jury took just two hours and 21 minutes to find Conor Duffy not guilty of murder but guilty of the manslaughter by a majority verdict of ten to one.
