A 32-year-old convicted rapist who attacked a woman within 13 hours of being freed from prison is to be sentenced next month.

Trevor Byrne, of O'Devanny Gardens off the North Circular Road, attacked and tried to rob a 24-year-old French woman after following her and forcing his way into her home in Phibsboro in September 2009.

Byrne was under Garda surveillance following his release from prison that day.

He had just finished a five-year sentence for attacking another woman. That attack came 36 hours after he had been concluded a 15-year sentence for raping a third woman.

In the latest incident, Byrne followed Naomi Kroi to her home in Leo Street in Phibsboro in the early hours of the morning and forced his way into her house.

He then brought her upstairs but fled when she managed to wake one of her flatmates.

She returned to Dublin from France today, on her 24th birthday, and told the court that she suffered nightmares, that Byrne never took her bag and that the situation could have been much worse if there had been no one else in the house.

When that attack occurred, Byrne had just finished the five-year sentence for attacking a woman from the Philippines in September 2005.

She was a nurse who worked at the Mater Hospital. He attacked and threatened to kill her - that attack came 36 hours after his release from a 15-year sentence for raping a woman in November of 1993.

That woman was 18 years of age. Byrne hit her with a brick and told her he had to kill her.

When he was granted three hours temporary release from prison to attend his brother's funeral in January of this year - three Gardai were assigned to watch him.

Over the past 18 years the court heard the 32-year-old has attacked three women -even though he has only been out of prison for less than 40 hours.

He will be sentenced next month.
