Health Minister Mary Harney has ruled out reopening or establishing a new redress scheme for the victims of Michael Neary in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Ms Harney said adequate compensation had been received by the women included in the terms of the scheme, and she said the situation had been dealt with in a sensitive and timely manner.

She confirmed that the total cost of the scheme was €20.6m.

Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said the pain and anguish of the victims had been compounded by the minister's failure to address the issue fairly.

Michael Neary is a disgraced obstetrician who removed women's wombs or ovaries necessarily.

Dr Neary was struck off the register of medical practitioners in 2003 for misconduct.
