The Orange Order has elected Edward Stevenson to replace Robert Saulters as its new Grand Master.

Mr Stevenson, a 55-year-old farmer from Co Tyrone, was Deputy Grand Master and County Grand Master of Tyrone.

He was elected unopposed at a meeting of the order's ruling body in Co Derry.

Mr Saulters confirmed last year that he would be standing down from a role that he held for 14 years.

The period was one of the most controversial in the organisation's history when Orange Order parades were often surrounded by violence.

Mr Saulters took the helm in 1996 as the Drumcree dispute came to prominence when residents objected to Orangemen marching through the nationalist Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, Co Armagh.
