An Garda Síochána has said that a total of 1,149 drink driving incidents were recorded during the Christmas and New Year period - a reduction of over 350 such cases during the same period a year ago.
The provisional statistics, published today, also indicate that fixed penalty notices were issued to more than 3,000 motorists for driving over the speed limit, while 965 motorists were prosecuted for driving while using a mobile phone.
The Garda Press Office said these statistics also show a reduction on the number of prosecutions for the same period in 2009.
However, it added that ten people lost their lives on the roads in December, and it again called for all road users to be careful.
