German students have donated over 130 shoe boxes of toys and gifts to the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

The English language students at the Saarland University decided to help an Irish charity after studying the situation here with their Professor, Bert Hornback.

The SVP’s National President, Mairéad Bushnell, said that the donation was unexpected but very welcome and would help brighten up Christmas for many children.

She added that the overall response to the society's Annual Appeal here had been wonderful.

The collection and delivery of the shoe boxes was sponsored by the Irish-German Fellowship in Saarland.
