1145 Update from Donegal County Council:

Donegal County Council's present stock of pure salt is 250 tonnes and an additional 200 tonnes of salt/grit mix. 1,050 tonnes is either being collected or delivered to the Winter Maintenance Salt Depots throughout Donegal over the next three days.

We are not expecting any further deliveries of salt until the New Year. We are assured that subsequent deliveries of salt will be made by the 4th January, 2011, at the latest.

Given the current and predicted salt delivery, Donegal County Council has extended the "Red Route" to cover the entire National Secondary Route (N.56).

This increases the length of salted roads in Donegal by 30% (from 365kms to 477kms) and reduces the "green route" (or sanded route) from 672kms to 560kms.

Drivers are urged not to assume that roads are ice-free even where they have been salted or gritted.

Stop using any fuel burning appliance immediately if you suspect it might be faulty. Unblock any vents that you might have covered over. If you find a person ill or unconscious and suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, ventilate the area immediately by opening doors and windows and get medical assistance.
