A 57-year-old man, arrested in south Belfast yesterday morning, has been charged with the murder of teenager Eileen Doherty in Belfast 37 years ago.
The man is due before Laganside Magistrates’ Court next Tuesday.
A second man, who is also 57 and was arrested in Newtownards yesterday morning, has been released unconditionally.
19-year-old Eileen Doherty was shot dead by gunmen who hijacked the taxi she was taking home from the Ormeau Road to Andersonstown on 30 September 1973.
The arrests came three months after the murder investigation was reopened following a review of the case by the PSNI’s specialist Historical Enquiries Team identified new evidential opportunities.
