Gardaí have arrested 13 men as part of an investigation into organised crime in the southeast.

The men, aged between 18 and 45, were arrested following a number of searches in Tipperary, Cork, Dublin and Waterford.

A number of hand-made weapons, documents, satellite navigation equipment and a small quantity of drugs were recovered by gardaí.

The men are being detained at a number of garda stations in the southeast.

A search was also carried out in open ground near Ashbourne, Co Meath earlier this evening.

Gardaí recovered a Bren general purpose machine gun and ammunition.

It is understood that some of the arrests are part of an investigation into the murder of settled Traveller Willie Stokes in Tipperary town last year.

The 48-year-old father-of-four was stabbed to death in front of his teenage son on a busy street on 18 December 2009.

More than a dozen people were arrested last year in connection with the murder.
