An investigation has been launched into an arson attack on a speed camera survey van in Dundalk, Co Louth.
The attack took place at 4.45am on the Dundalk to Carrickmacross Road.
The van with an operator inside was parked at the side of the road when he smelled smoke. He got out of the van before it was engulfed in flames.
It is believed a front window was smashed and curtain and seating were set on fire.
The van was completely destroyed in the attack and is now sealed off as part of the investigation by gardaí at Dundalk.
An area is surveyed five times by these vans before a camera is placed.
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has condemned the arson attack on the GoSafe van.
'It was an outrageous and reckless act which could have had grave and tragic consequences.
'GoSafe van personnel are out on our roads day and night working with An Garda Síochána to reduce speed-related collisions and stop the needless loss of lives on our roads.
'It is important work directed at ensuring that fewer families and communities here have to endure the pain and suffering which follows collisions and deaths on our roads.'
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, in particular they would like to speak to anyone who saw a silver car with two occupants in the area.
