Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service has confirmed that a police officer will not face charges in connection with the Loughinisland massacre carried out by loyalist paramilitaries 16 years ago.

Six men were killed when UVF gunmen opened fire in the Heights Bar in the Co Down village while regulars were watching Ireland compete in the World Cup on television.

A police reservist had been reported to the PPS by the police ombudsman.

He was questioned earlier this year over perverting the course of justice and aiding the killers' escape.

However, the PPS has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to provide a reasonable prospect of convicting the police officer.

Sinn Féin and the SDLP have criticised the decision not to prosecute, saying it is frustrating for the families of those who died.
