The High Court has granted an order to the HSE to administer antiretroviral drugs to a child upon birth, whose mother has been tested positive for the HIV virus.

The woman at the centre of the case, who is heavily pregnant, has agreed to a Caesarean procedure within days, so the drugs, which will help reduce the risk of the virus transmitting from her to the child, can be administered.

The woman had requested through her lawyers that the court investigate the benefits or risks that the drugs could have on the newborn.
