A 49-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court in Castlebar for raping his daughter over a 15-year period between 1985 and 2000.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies 105 charges of rape, buggery, and indecent assault.

He is pleading not guilty to 81 charges of rape, 12 charges of buggery, and 12 charges of indecent assault.

Council for the State Paul Burns gave what he called a brief and blunt outline of the case against the accused to the jury of seven men and five women.

He said the man began sexually abusing his daughter when she was five years old until she was eight years old, when he then left home for two years.

The abuse continued when he returned and he began having full sexual intercourse with her as a young teenager.

In 2000, his daughter had a baby with her boyfriend, but within two weeks of the birth her father had raped her again.

In her evidence, the 30-year-old woman gave graphic detail of the horrific abuse she had endured for what she said was most of her life.

The trial continues tomorrow.
