Gardaí have confirmed that new speed cameras are to come into effect from midnight on Monday.

They said the cameras would be on roads across the country where fatal crashes have occurred as a result of speeding.

Up to 45 new Gatso vans will be based at 600 locations.

A map of locations where the cameras will operate will be available on the garda website -

AA Ireland has welcomed the introduction of the cameras and insisted the move was ‘not a money-making venture’.

The association said the cameras will only be at identified accident blackspots, and that the private company operating the cameras are paid by the hour and not by how many people they catch speeding.
