Fianna Fáil TD Frank Fahey has settled a defamation action against the Irish Independent.
An apology read in court today said an article published in April 2006 when he was Minister for State at the Department of Justice was untrue.
The article said he had failed to declare and register an interest in property in the US and had thereby failed to comply with his obligations under the Standards in Public Office Act.
It also claimed he had denied having an interest in the property.
Frank Fahey said in a statement: 'I am glad this matter is now closed. It has been a distressing time for me and my family. I am very satisfied with the outcome of this case.
'It is wrong that newspapers would publish things that are untrue, especially when they have been told the things are untrue or can establish independently that they are not true. I accept the Irish Independent’s apology in the matter.'
The newspaper has acknowledged the statements were untrue and has apologised for the 'great distress' caused to Mr Fahey.
