A number of complaints have been made to the Garda Ombudsman Commission arising out of the policing of the student demonstration in Dublin this week.

Three complaints were made by members of the public about the policing of the student demonstration and were received by the Commission yesterday.

It is understood they involve claims of Garda brutality, which will now be investigated.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission was set up to investigate complaints against members of An Garda Síochána independently.

A small group of people occupied a side entrance to the Department of Finance on Merrion Row on Wednesday.

The Union of Students of Ireland criticised the move and accused left wing groups of hijacking their event.

Three gardaí were injured after they were hit with objects thrown by demonstrators, batons were drawn and the Garda Public Order Unit used to remove the group occupying the Department. A number of demonstrators were also injured.
