The Seanad is to debate an alleged lack of balance and excess negativity in some RTÉ programmes, the Leader of the House, Donie Cassidy, said this morning.

Senator Cassidy said there were some magnificent people in RTÉ, but added there were some who were just looking for Television Audience Measurement ratings.

He said RTÉ Director-General Cathal Goan and the RTÉ Authority might have a look at the balance in those programmes, as all-negative broadcasting was not fair to the public.

He was supporting a call for such a debate from Fianna Fáil Senator Terry Leyden who said that RTÉ was obliged, under legislation, to be impartial and objective in its programming.
