A man and a woman have gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Cork, charged with the murder of a 25-year-old man in the city two years ago.

33-year-old Gillian Purcell, whose address was given as Simon Anderson's Quay, Cork, and formerly of High Hill, and 44-year-old John Walsh, of Carrigmore Park, Ballinlough, Cork, pleaded not guilty to murdering John McManus in a flat at Verdon Place, Wellington Road, between 29 October and 7 November 2008.

Mr Justice Paul Carney was told that the trial is likely to last at least three weeks.

A jury of six men and six women has been sworn in to hear the case.
