An 18-year-old man, who was in a critical condition following an attack in Dundalk, has died.

Two men have been arrested over the attack.

The men, aged 21 and 23, are being questioned at Dundalk Garda station.

The man was seriously assaulted in a row with seven other men on Castle Road shortly after 9pm.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and then onto Beaumont Hospital in Dublin before being returned to Drogheda.

The Castle Street area was sealed off as garda forensic experts carried out work at the scene of the attack.

They would particularly like to speak to a motorist who reported the incident to a passing Garda patrol car.
