The Chairman of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, Lord Saville, has said he is not surprised that the inquiry into what happened took as long and cost as much as it did.
The Saville inquiry lasted 12 years and cost over €200m. But questioned today by MPs on the Northern Ireland Select Committee at Westminster, he said he could not have gone any faster and that he did not waste public money.
It is the first time Lord Saville has spoken publicly since his Bloody Sunday Report was published last June.
He insisted that given the scale of the task, he was not surprised it took as long as it did, adding that there were over 4,000 witnesses, 400 days of hearings and 14,000 written submissions.
