A garda-issue firearm and a quantity of ammunition, which was thought to have gone missing from a garda station, has been found in the garda station.

The Garda Commissioner appointed a senior officer to investigate the disappearance of the revolver and 20 rounds of ammunition after they were recorded missing following an audit at Tipperary Garda Station.

The .38 Calibre Smith & Wesson and ammunition was discovered this morning in another secure area in the station.

The weapon was not a personal-issue firearm but belonged to the station.

The investigation by Chief Superintendent Michael McGarry from Kilkenny has now established that while the gun should have been returned to the station's safe storage area it was not stolen and remained secure within the precincts of Tipperary Garda Station.
