A 33-year-old man has appeared in court in Dublin charged with the murder of an inmate at Mountjoy Prison in June of last year.

Alan Smith, Ballybough House, Dublin, was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.

He is accused of the murder of David Byrne, 26, who died after he was attacked and beaten with a sock containing batteries in the prison's C-Wing.

Byrne was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, but discharged himself later that evening and was taken back to prison.

However, the next morning staff were unable to wake him.

He was rushed to hospital, but never recovered.

Detective Sergeant Robert O'Reilly gave evidence of Smith's arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that Smith made no reply to the charge of murdering Byrne.

There was no application for bail.
