A post mortem examination was carried out this afternoon on the remains of the pensioner who died following an assault in Co Cavan.

Johnny Golden, 73, died in Cavan General Hospital last night.

He had never regained consciousness following the assault at his home in Doogary, near Killeshandra.

He was attacked between 8pm on 6 September and 11am the following morning.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Kahlid Jabbar performed the post mortem examination at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, Co Meath.

The results are expected to be released tomorrow.

A 17-year-old youth was questioned about the incident but released without charge.
