A 35-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned in Dublin following an international investigation into cocaine trafficking.

The Garda National Drugs Unit, along with the Swiss police, believes it has disrupted the activities of a West African drugs gang based in Dublin.

The gang has been using Eastern Europeans as drug couriers to smuggle cocaine into Ireland through various European airports.

It was then brought from there to Ireland, between 7kg and 8kg at a time, worth around €500,000.

The man, who is from Nigeria, is being detained in Pearse Street Garda Station this morning.

He is expected to be charged with conspiracy to import drugs into Ireland and appear in court later today.
