A 61-year-old man has appeared in court in Nenagh charged in connection with an incident yesterday in which a car, with a six-month-old baby boy inside, was stolen.

Patrick McCarthy, of Mullaly Grove, Cappamore, Co Limerick, is charged with the unauthorised taking of a car at Newport, Co Tipperary yesterday afternoon.

Mr McCarthy was arrested after the car was abandoned at the railway station in Nenagh yesterday afternoon.

He was questioned and released on bail to appear at Nenagh District Court today.

The court heard the investigation into the incident is still ongoing and the file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions for directions on how to proceed with the case.

Mr McCarthy is unemployed and was granted legal aid. He was remanded on bail to appear at Nenagh District Court again on 5 November.

The baby was uninjured and has been reunited with his parents.
