A woman has been stabbed to death and a man has been seriously injured in an incident at Dungannon, Co Tyrone.
Police were called to the Merron Mews area at around 3.30pm.
The PSNI said the man was treated in hospital for serious stab wounds.
Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area this afternoon and has any information to contact detectives.
DUP Assembly member and Stormont Justice Committee Chairman Lord Morrow said he understood that it was a domestic incident.
Regardless of the circumstances, he said he condemned this vicious and brutal incident. He extended his sympathies to the families involved.
In recent weeks, he said, Northern Ireland had witnessed several stabbings and once again this highlighted the need for proper criminal justice policies to be in place.
Dungannon Sinn Féin Councillor Phelim Gildernew expressed his shock at the fatal stabbing.
Councillor Gildernew, who is also the Chair of Dungannon District Policing Partnership, said the stabbing had brought a deep sense of shock to the local area.
He said his thoughts were with the family of the murder victim, who is the mother of young children.
He said the latest stabbing added to the high number of knife attacks in Northern Ireland in recent times.
This was a very disturbing trend and urgent action needed to be taken to remove knives from the streets, he said.
