A man found guilty of killing a 28-year-old Dublin man, whose body was found in the boot of his car last year, has been jailed for nine years.

Stephen Penrose, 28, of no fixed abode, admitted killing David Sharkey but had denied murder.

Mr Sharkey was stabbed 13 times while delivering heroin to an apartment in Navan on 17 May last year.

The Central Criminal Court previously heard that Mr Penrose had only planned to rob Mr Sharkey, but he had bought a knife earlier that day.

In passing sentence, Mr Justice Paul Carney said he was taking into account the fact that Mr Penrose bought the knife.

Mr Justice Carney said it was his experience that those who first equip themselves with knives use them with fatal effects.

He also noted Mr Sharkey was the second son in his family to die in a knife killing.

Mr Justice Carney said he was taking into account Mr Penrose's guilty plea to manslaughter, his genuine remorse and the efforts he has made to get away from the 'scourge of drugs'.
