The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has voted to ratify the Croke Park agreement on public sector pay and reform.

A total of 86% of AGSI members who voted in the ballot accepted the proposals.

AGSI General Secretary Joe Dirwan said: 'The agreement is very far from being perfect, a fact which we pointed out to our members prior to the ballot.

'They have voted to accept the agreement as being their share of the sacrifice needed to put the economy of the country back on track.

'They now expect all other sectors to bear a fair proportion of that sacrifice as well, especially the high earners and those who brought us to the brink of bankruptcy in the first place.'
