A woman has appeared at Newtownards Magistrates Court charged with sexually abusing her children in Co Down over a 20-year period between 1972 and 1992.

The woman who is in her 50s, has five children. She is charged with 15 counts of cruelty, four of indecent assault and four of gross indecency. She is due to appear again in court in June.

Yesterday, the woman's ex-husband, who is also the father of the alleged victims, appeared in court in Downpatrick along with another man on a series of child sex abuse charges, including rape.

Both men denied the sex abuse charges and were refused bail.

A PSNI detective constable told Newtownards Magistrates' Court that the charges are all related to the same case and that feelings in the community were running high.

Four other people arrested as part of the same enquiry were released on bail.

One of the men in court yesterday was accused of raping a girl, gross indecency, making threats to kill and having a gun.

He denied the offences between 1983 and 1986, but admitted to a recent offence of possession of ammunition.

The second man denied rape and a series of child sex and cruelty charges between 1979 and 1986.
