Gardaí in Co Donegal are investigating the discovery of what appears to be human skeletal remains at a football pitch in the south of the county.

The training pitch at the Naomh Bríd GAA Club in Ballintra is being redeveloped at the moment and sand was delivered for this purpose from the Gweedore area.

At 7.40am gardaí said what appears to be human skeletal remains including a skull were discovered in the sand and the local coroner was notified.

The sand came from a quarry at Carrick, Gweedore, and gardaí are carrying out investigations at this location as well as at the GAA pitch in Ballintra.

However they said it is much too early to say where the remains originated, or how old they are.
