A 25-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Cork, charged with the murder of a 62-year-old bar worker in October 2008.

Paul Murphy from Kilmore Road, Knocknaheeny, Cork, pleaded not guilty to murdering Donal Manley in the city.

Mr Murphy also pleaded not guilty to charges of causing serious harm to Mr Manley and stealing property to the value of €600 from him.

Mr Manley had lived for 20 years at High Street in Cork City, where his body was found on the evening of 12 October 2008.

Neighbours had not seen Mr Manley for two days and found signs of a disturbance at his home when they went to investigate.

Mr Manley's body was found on the floor in a downstairs room. His jaw was broken in two places, his skull and cheekbones were also broken and there was a lot of blood at the scene.

Prosecuting senior counsel Mary Ellen Ring said a 'severe' assault on Mr Manley led to his death. She said it was the State's case that Mr Murphy had carried out that assault.

Ms Ring said there would be evidence that blood found on the heel of one of Mr Murphy's runners matched Mr Manley's blood.

She also said that impressions of footwear found in Mr Manley's house matched Mr Murphy's footwear and that a palm print of blood found on a door in Mr Manley's kitchen/living room also matched Mr Murphy's palm print.

The trial is expected to last up to two weeks.
