Republicans suspected after cigarettes find

Dundalk - Haul worth almost €12m
Dundalk - Haul worth almost €12m

The possible involvement of dissident republicans has not been ruled out in the latest multi-million euro seizure of smuggled cigarettes in Co Louth.

Nearly 30m cigarettes with a retail value of around €12m were seized by customs officers in Dundalk today.

The cigarettes came into the country hidden in timber pallets from a Russian ship which docked in Greenore several days ago.

That is the same harbour where Europe's largest seizure of smuggled cigarettes took place last October when 120 million cigarettes were discovered.

Customs officers are not ruling out a link between that attempt and today's seizure.
