A 28-year-old man from Drimnagh in Dublin has appeared in court charged with operating a drug dealing business from his prison cell.

Brian Rattigan was charged with five counts of possessing heroin, with an intent to sell or supply, and of possession of a mobile phone in prison.

Cloverhill District Court was told that Rattigan made no reply when he was charged by Det Garda Shane Curtis of Sundrive Road Drugs Unit.

He is charged with five counts of possessing heroin worth over €12,500 for personal use and within intent to sell or supply at Hughes Road, Walkinstown, Dublin, on 21 May 2008 and of possessing two mobile phones at Portlaoise Prison on 22 May 2008.

There was no application for bail.

Rattigan was granted legal aid, awarding the services of two counsel and was remanded in custody to appear at the current sitting of the Circuit Court by Judge Brian Sheridan.
