The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that two male prisoners escaped from custody after they were granted an escorted visit to a funeral home to view the remains of deceased relative in Co Roscommon.

The incident happened at around 2pm yesterday afternoon.

The gardaí were informed immediately and the Irish Prison Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the escape.

The prisoners were being detained at Caslterea Prison.

Prisons sources say the men were serving three years each for assault.
