Man to be charged over Longford man's death

A man will appear at a special sitting of the District Court in Longford tomorrow charged with assaulting Noel Keegan who collapsed and died after an incident in the town last night.

It is understood the man collapsed after he was assaulted in the Park Road-Teffia park area of the town shortly before 9.00pm.

Two people were originally arrested by gardaí a man and a woman in their 20s. The woman has been released and the man will appear in court tomorrow.

It is thought that the victim, who was out walking, was confronted on the footpath between Park Road and Teffia park in the town.

After the incident the man collapsed and became seriously ill. He was brought to the midland regional hospital in Mullingar where his condition deteriorated and he died later.

Mr Keegan was married with a family and resided in Farnagh outside Longford town.

He had worked in recent years as a security guard at the Flancare Warehouse in the business park on the Athlone road in Longford.

The scene has been sealed off and a forensic examination is underway.

A post mortem is now being carried out at the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar by the Assistant State pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.
