Donegal crash suspect facing Leitrim charges

A man who was involved in the car crash which led to the death of a young garda in Donegal last week has appeared in court in Leitrim on unrelated charges.

Martin Mc Dermott, 24, from Castlegrove in Raphoe in Donegal, was released from Letterkenny General Hospital this morning where he was being treated for his injuries.

He was arrested and brought before a special sitting of Carrick on Shannon District Court on two outstanding bench warrants; for failing to appear in court to answer public order and drunken driving charges.

Mr McDermott was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear in court again in Letterkenny next Wednesday, 30 December.

Garda Gary Mc Loughlin died in hospital after a car crashed into the parked patrol car in which he was sitting in the early hours of 14 December, near Buncrana in Co Donegal.

A second garda, Bernard Mc Loughlin was also injured.

Gardai say the investigation into the incident is continuing
