The build-up of traffic increased this evening, as commuters travel to their relatives for Christmas. Tens of thousands of people are using the roads and public transport on what is one of the busiest travel days of the year.
This afternoon temperatures in midland and western counties were as low as -5C. Donegal and Dublin are among few counties were temperatures are above 0C.
Ice and snow is continuing to cause problems with local and minor roads badly affected.
Main roads are gritted but caution is still being advised.
The cold snap is set to continue, according to Met Éireann. Frost and ice patches will continue in midland, western and northern counties and rain showers affecting southern and eastern counties will turn to snow inland.
The PSNI is warning drivers about treacherous conditions on the M1 between Belfast and Dungannon. Police said the motorway has been reduced to one lane in some sections.
