A man and woman have appeared before the District Court in Cork charged in connection with organising prostitution and operating brothels in Cork city.

This brings to four the number of people brought before the courts following an investigation by local gardai and the Criminal Assets Bureau.

53-year-old Tony Linnane and his partner 38-year-old Caroline O'Leary were brought before Cork District court after they were arrested by gardai in the city today.

The couple, who live at Scartbarry, Watergrasshill, in Co Cork were both charged with 21 counts of organising prostitution at 18 Grafton Street and 26 John Street in Cork city by controlling one or more prostitutes and a further 21 counts of keeping or managing brothels at these two addresses on dates in 2006 and 2007.

Garda Inspector Declan O'Sullivan and Detective Garda Damine Maloney both gave evidence that neither made any reply when charged and cautioned following their arrest.

An application to have the case adjourned until 6 January was granted.

Tony Linnane was released on bail on his own bond of €50,000, €5,000 of this to be lodged in cash into the court by that date.

Caroline O'Leary was also granted bail on a bond of €5,000.

Both are due to appear again before the district court in Cork on 6 January for the presentation of the Books of Evidence.
